RITH- Thimphu

The history of the Royal Institute for Tourism and Hospitality (RITH) dates back to 1974, when the present campus was built as the Motithang Hotel to accommodate state guests during the coronation of the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck.

In 2002, the Royal Government of Bhutan approved a feasibility study to establish the Hotel and Tourism Management Training Institute (HTMTI), which was established in 2003. With support from the Federal Government of Austria through a co-financing agreement signed in 2005, the institute’s infrastructure and training facilities were further developed, and the project was implemented from 2007.

In 2010, the institute was renamed the Royal Institute for Tourism and Hospitality (RITH). It commenced its first academic session on 2 August 2010 with 50 students and was officially inaugurated on 15 October 2010 by Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck.

Today, RITH is Bhutan’s premier tourism and hospitality training institute, offering a two-year diploma program jointly certified by RITH and Tourism Schools Salzburg, Austria. The institute combines academic learning with practical training and industry internships while also providing short-term skills training. Over the years, RITH has become a leading institution in developing Bhutan’s tourism and hospitality workforce and has actively supported numerous national events across the country.
